FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I'm interested in commission work for my doll.  What is the process?
A: Contact me with details about your doll and what you are looking to have done.  Please be prepared to provide photos as well.  Once work is confirmed, an estimate will be given for total cost.  Payment in full is due up front and can be made via PayPal or Venmo.  Turn around time varies depending on the work being performed, but is typically 6-8 weeks from the time the doll(s) arrive.  Note that any treatment for green ear, lightening, or tinting will add on to that time frame.  Items are shipped back via Priority Mail.

Q: What kind of paints do you use to repaint with?
A: I actually use a variety of acrylic paints including Liquitex, Folk Art, Americana, and Delta brand paints and I always mix any acrylic paint I use with a little bit of Liquitex Flow Aid (now called Slow-Dri Fluid Additive).  I seal all of my painted work with a brushable matte sealant by Vallejo.

Q: Can you show me how to paint my dolls?
A: I have painting videos posted here that you may find helpful.

Q: How do you get such precise and tiny brush strokes?
A: I've been painting since around 2004, so I have lots and lots of practice!  The key is knowing how to mix your paint to the right consistency as well as use the right sized brush for the right sized job.  I rotate through 4-5 different brushes whenever I paint.  For example, I do not use the same sized brush to paint a Vintage Barbie's black lash ridge as I do the lips.  The finer the details need to be, the smaller and thinner the brush tip is.

Q: What kind of hair do you use to reroot?
A: I use high quality saran and nylon hair products whenever I reroot.  Some dolls work best with nylon (such as the Liddle Kiddles and Tutti/friends dolls) while others look best with saran. I can also reroot using vintage hair and keep some of it on hand from original Barbie dolls used as donor dolls.

Q: How many dolls can I send in at a time?
A: It depends on what they each need.  I am limiting the amount of dolls I am taking in each month to help with workload.  Send me a message and let me know what you're looking to have done and we can go from there.

Q: Can you use hair from a vintage doll to reroot another doll?
A: Sometimes, depending on the condition of the hair you'd like to use.  If you prefer this method, please reach out to me so we can discuss what you have to make sure it would work with your project.

Q: What do you use to clean the dolls with?
A: I make a paste mixture of baking soda and unscented plant based dish soap to clean hair, heads, and bodies with. I use dye-free/scent-free liquid fabric softener rinsed with hot water to condition the hair.  I don't use harsh chemicals like bleach or Comet or anything that is scented.

Q: How do you clean off original paint from a doll face?
A: The only way to remove factory original paint from a doll's face is with acetone.  However, the only time I will use acetone on a doll's face is if the repaint area I will do cannot cover the existing (factory original) paint.  Otherwise, I leave all original face paint intact and clean/prep the area and then paint and seal directly over that.  I do not like to use acetone on vintage vinyl as it is a highly caustic product and should be used sparingly.  If there was previous repaint work done, that can be removed with just rubbing alcohol.

Q: Can you treat my doll for green ear or for nose or chin nips due to mice damage?
A: It depends.  I ask that you contact me with photos of the doll in question as prices depend on the severity of the areas and if the doll has been treated previously for green ear.  As far as toe chips, nose and chin nips, and missing fingers, I can repair these areas, but again, I would need to see the doll (photos are fine) for an estimate.

Q: Can you repair my Talking doll?
A:  At this time, I don't repair Talking dolls.  Although, this is definitely something I would love to learn about one day!

Q: Do you combine shipping if I were to have multiple dolls sent?
A: Absolutely.  Shipping is based on the package weight and your zip code (or country if outside of the States).  I'll ask you for these when we set up payment terms.

Q: Can I just send you the doll head without the body?
A: Yes.  The only time I need the body is if the nails need to be painted.

Q: Do I have to pay with PayPal or can I just send a check?
A: I gladly accept PayPal, Venmo, personal checks, and money orders as payment methods..
